The Warming Surfaces Company launches outdoor tables utilizing its unique digital warmth technology

As EU countries strive to meet increasingly strict energy consumption criteria, the need for innovative technologies is growing. With the company’s Halia™ digital warming surfaces technology, heating emissions can be cut by more than 95%. Now, the first commercial application is available to pre-order.

OULU, Finland (February 24th, 2025)  The Warming Surfaces Company Ltd., a Finnish pioneer in digital warming technology, has launched its first warming terrace tables. The furniture is the first end-product to utilize the company’s Halia warming surfaces technology. The warming tables save over 80% in energy costs compared to conventional electric terrace heaters and are designed to offer real-time thermal comfort for better outdoor dining experiences.

Halia warming is developed in response to growing energy efficiency and sustainability demands for heating in various living spaces. One such sector is outdoor dining. In March 2022, France became the first country to ban terrace heaters. This is because terrace heaters release half a million tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to the annual emissions of 300,000 cars. Similar policies to ban gas-based heaters are being implemented or planned in other regions and major cities such as Brussels and Barcelona.

“Heating of living spaces consumes an incredible amount of energy. Currently, over 60% of the energy consumed by EU households goes to warming living spaces, while the building sector produces nearly 40% of all global CO2 emissions. Furniture is an untapped opportunity to efficiently provide more warmth to homes and public spaces. Halia fast-response radiant warming is cost-effective and sustainably integrated into furniture and large area interior surfaces,” says Jani-Mikael Kuusisto, CEO and Co-founder of The Warming Surfaces Company. “With Halia warming, we are doing to heating what LEDs did to lighting. These new warming tables are the first step towards our mission.

The Warming Surfaces Company’s outdoor terrace tables equipped with Halia warming are particularly suitable for restaurants, cafés, and bars. With warming tables, customers can sit outside more comfortably and enjoy their meals and beverages, even as the weather gets colder. Localized radiant warming from below the table top creates a cozy pocket of warmth, warming the large leg muscles for better comfort than conventional heater lamps.

According to simulations carried out by Semcon AB, a multinational technology company, tables utilizing Halia technology were two times more comfortable for the user than traditional outdoor heating solutions.

Even at full capacity, Halia warming uses 75% less energy than propane-based terrace heaters. In addition, the warming surface only activates when it senses someone at the table and is powered with safe, low-voltage DC electricity. There’s also a significant reduction in emissions. Based on pilot measurements in Finland, Sitowise Oyj, a Nordic expert on the built environment, concluded that four tables with Halia warming could reduce emissions by over 95% compared to a terrace propane heater.

In 2024, The Warming Surfaces Company raised €1.7M from, for example, private angel investors, Business Finland, and The Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres) to implement its go-to-market strategy further and boost the industrial production of its Halia digital warming surfaces. In January 2025, the company was accepted into Business Finland’s Deep Tech Accelerator program, in which companies are eligible for up to €1.2M funding over 3 years.

“With increased funding, we can get to the next level with Halia. There is an urgent need for Halia radiant warming in furniture and buildings – both new and renovated. Our ‘warmth when and where needed’ approach to warming is key in reducing energy consumption and improving health and comfort,” Kuusisto concludes.
